Science fiction is considered by many to be a shallow world in which to escape. They imagine novels set in the future with improbable creatures. The thing about science fiction is that there is no limit to what can take place or be imagined as it is totally outside of our world.
However, it is precisely that feature of science fiction that allows unfettered creativity and that allows us to shape worlds as we imagine they might be or as we think they should be. The book or film exists in the mind of the author only and he or she has complete dominance over that world.
The author can determine which creatures exist, which worlds exist; he or she does not have to take help and advice from anybody. They have a blank page on which to paint their brave new world. They can use their characters for good or for evil and they can examine questions and moralities which are alien to us. (more...)
